Getting Computers To Use Less Energy

Many computers now automatically will turn off or at least 'hibernate' when the computer is not used for a certain period of time.

This no doubt does decrease the energy usage, but the problem is that sometimes you are using the computer just without using the mouse or keyboard, and sleep mode will turn off the monitor too.

Therefore one suggestion has been to use a webcam watching you all the time, as it were, to see if anyone is looking at the monitor.

At times when no-one looks at the monitor for, say, a few minutes, it would suspend it. Researchers looking into this method of reducing the use of energy by a computer say it could have significant energy savings for a computer, and indeed this could amount to well over half of the energy that computer uses, a significant saving indeed!
